Hi Friends,
We've missed all of you. The last few weeks have been busier than usual. Mama's work is having a big shake-up, Mama and Papa are making plans to move and I haven't been feeling well.

Mama took me to the vet. I have very high blood pressure, elevated thyroid and my retinas are detaching. The latter is apparently due to the high blood pressure. I don't see very well and my eyes are dilated a lot. However, Mama said the vet said that the vision can come back once the BP is under control. I've been on both BP and thyroid pills, but I don't mind because I get a pill pocket twice a day.

I go back to the vet on Wednesday for a two-week check up. They'll re-test my blood for the thyroid and take my blood pressure. I've been feeling a bit better so we're hopeful for a good report.

If Annie is excited about something, her meow sounds like a harmonica. If she wants something, her meow sounds like she's pushing out air.
It's been in the 70's here in Southern California. We're enjoying the sunshine coming through the windows and on our patio.
Annie likes to chase Simba.
Annie, the pickiest cat who's ever lived here and only likes two flavors of Fancy Feast, has a taste for smoked Muenster cheese and will steal it off your plate. (She also likes coffee cake.)
Simba likes to be rocked in the Lazy Boy chair while he's doing the monorail on the top of it. The faster the chair moves, the better. He's a closet thrill seeker.
Lucy was named after the lead character in the TV show I Love Lucy. When Mama saw her in the shelter 15 and a half years ago, she was sleeping in her litter box and purred nonstop when Mama took her out the cage.
Lucy, Simba and Annie live together harmoniously, something Mama despaired of several months ago when Annie came to live here.

Mancat Loves His Man

For those of you that don't know me (or forgot about me), I'm Simba. I very rarely get any air time at Lucy's Lounge. Lucy has ~~reluctantly~~ graciously allowed me to say a few words. Let's be real. If she wasn't sleeping so soundly right now, I wouldn't have a chance.

Lucy is always talking about Mama and I guess Mama is all right for a girl. After all, she serves up my food in a timely manner. Papa, on the other hand, is whom I love and adore. Did you know the sun rises and sets on him? I sleep next to his head all night. If he turns over, I move to the other side because I like to see his face. He gets up to the restroom several times a night and I go with him. I watch him eat. I lie next to him at night while he watches TV. I never leave his side.

I was diagnosed with kidney problems back in June 2010. Mama posted about it here and here. I thought I'd just let you know that I'm still doing really well and only need fluids about two days a week.

I'm waiting here for my Fancy Feast to be dished up for breakfast. One good thing about Annie coming to live here is that we now get only fishy Fancy Feast because that's all Annie will eat.

Sadly, Mama had to go back to work this week. She says it was crazy. I'm sure lots of you are in the same boat. That's why I am so glad it's the weekend! Mama wants to relax, read, watch movies and go for a walk or two. I like to join her for the first three. However, she has lots of running around to do too. Well, I don't. I'll be in the bed or the ham-mick. What plans do you have?

Hi Friends,

Mama wants to thank all of you for your comments about Annie and the bed. She's been sleeping in it! Every day Annie gets more and more comfortable in her home. Mama is really happy about this, but personally, I don't see what the big deal is. Mama keeps talking about all these great changes Annie has made, from constantly running under the bed to hanging out in the living room, from living in a constant state of fear to curling up in the cat bed or Mama's bed. Whatever.

On to more important things: we received the Liebster Blog Award from our gorgeous friends Mr. Darcy and Sookie and their mom at Kitcaboodles.

Toys and Stuff

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! We got a couple toys and some Temptations treats from our grammy. You can see our new wooly fish and blue mousie in this picture. We also got a green toy on a stick for Annie who only likes interactive toys that Mama has drag around for her (between you and me, Mama says it's boring but it's the only way to tire Annie out).

A few weeks ago, I talked about this cat bed that Mama got from her work for free. She got it for Annie's recovery after her surgery but Annie never used it. Simba claimed it for a few days, but all in all it has been sitting empty. Well, last night Papa put Annie in it and forced her to sit in it for about a minute. Annie very rarely sits still and never finds a comfy spot for herself. She mainly paces around the house. She can never relax! That's why it's so shocking that she's now going in the bed on her own.

Sadly, she still hasn't actually slept in it. She has to constantly look around. Some good news is that she and I have been sleeping with Mama at night and I haven't been hissing at her (for the most part).

Oh, I got some ham for Christmas. Mama brought it back from Christmas dinner at her sister's house. It was so good!

Hi Friends!

Mama and I have seriously missed you all this past week. She's been really busy with work and hasn't even been able to visit or post.

Annie's tummy is all healed and her furs are growing quickly. She and I aren't friends but we tolerate each other. She usually doesn't go on the bed when I'm on it, so Mama snapped this picture because this doesn't happen very often.

We're a little sad because Mama and Papa are going to take a break for a few weeks. We will miss you and want to wish you a blessed Thanksgiving. We will be around this weekend and are looking forward to visiting everyone. Then we'll be back in mid December.

Annie is so cute. You can't tell in pictures, but she's a tiny cat, not skinny, just small, much smaller than Lucy and Simba, with short little legs. She's not cuddly at all. She'll lie down for a tummy rub or some petting for a few moments and then she nips. It's so hard to have such a cute kitty that doesn't really want to be loved on and just nips. She loves toys. Actually, she's obsessed by the interactive toys. I keep them in the closet. Every time I open the closet, she's right there hoping for play time.

I loved my patio in Pennsylvania. This one is just so-so. Plus, Mama has no plants, just Papa's barbeque and some chairs.

I love when it gets sunny (it's not very sunny today). I sit in a sun puddle and wait for someone to open the patio door.

This past week has been pretty uneventful except for Mama's usual business. I'm where you'll usually find me.

Mama wouldn't get my tail of disrespect if she didn't disturb my nap with that stupid flashy box.

Annie's tummy has been healing.

Simba's new spot is this new bed. Mama ordered this two weeks before Annie's surgery. At her work, people give points as recognition and then you can order what you want with those points from a catalog. Mama saw this bed and thought it would be good for Annie's recovery. Well, it turns out that Annie's recovery time was nil and the bed didn't even get shipped until over a month after her surgery (and Annie still sleeps under the bed). We just received the bed last week.

Simba and I are friends. This may not seem like a big deal, but Mama says it took me about a decade to get comfortable with him. I used to really not like him. Mama and Papa have noticed that over the last year we've grown closer.

This scratching post came to us from Annie's previous owners. Even though she's declawed, she loves to rub her paws on it just like she has claws. Simba and I love hanging out together on it.

Simba came to live with us when he was around four years old. We are now both 15 and growing old together.

We weren't counting on this.

Hi friends. It's so good to be back. Mama has really taken over my blog lately!

I've wanted to post all week but Mama's been complaining how busy and stressed she's been with her job. Since she keeps me in Fancy Feast, Temptations and litter, I try to be understanding. In these pictures I'm enjoying my freshly washed pink blankie.

Mama took Annie to the Vet on Wednesday for a follow-up exam. The doctor said she's healing really well. Depending on how she does over the next few weeks, she may not need any long-term medication.

Marg, Friends and an Award

I first want to give a huge thank-you to Marg at Margs Pets. She offered to do the auction for Annie. I know it was a lot of hard work coordinating the donations, getting them on the site, contacting people and now receiving and coordinating the payments. I wish I could truly articulate how much I really appreciate everything she's done to help Annie. She has been amazing but is also an inspiration because of all she does for animals on a daily basis.

We received this award from both Whisppy and Twinkletoe Tails. First, we want to talk a little about these friends.

Or friends at Whisppy are just wonderful. They have adopted many kitties (bunnies and guinea pigs too) but also help many of the cats on the street in their area by getting them vet care and getting them neutered. They tirelessly help animals and clearly have a true love for them.We also received this from Twinkletoe Tails. They have four kitties (I think I have that right) and tell the funnest stores about them as well as the kitties their mom had in the past. We've just recently discovered them. We just love their blog and their mom, Paula, is so sweet. Thank you to both of you for this award!! We definitely consider you both inspirations

The award is called Premio Destellos Brillantes en el Cielo Azul (Bright Flashes in the Blue Sky Award). We are to describe what we dream or wish for most in the world. Well, our true wish was for Annie to be well from both FIC (Feline Idiopathic Cystitis) and bladder stones. Since she just had her surgery and will get ongoing care for the FIC, our wish goes back to wanting so badly for there to be no homeless and no mistreated animals.

We are to pass this on to certain people, but we have been inspired by all of you. We've received so much caring and support and kindness from many, many people. Our list would be non-ending!

Annie has been eating like a hog and is so happy to be home.

I took these pictures last night, about an hour after we got home. They aren't very good. She wouldn't sit still long enough. She kept walking all over the house and then stopping for pets.

This is just her tummy crease. You can't see her incision here.

Everyone was getting along until Lucy, mistress of intimidation, walked by her very closely and slowly. Annie got scared and hissed. Lucy hissed multiple times and then there were growls for the next few minutes.

We have to keep Annie's activity level very low for the next two weeks. There's nothing she enjoys more than running around the living room chasing the dragonfly toy for at least an hour. I won't be able to play with Lucy either because Annie can sense a toy across the house. I'm afraid we're going to have some bored kitties.

Annie gets pain medicine twice a day. It's a liquid and I give her treats right after. Lucy and Simba aren't complaining because they get treats too. Miss Annie will only eat fishy canned food and it can't have been refrigerated, thank you very much.

Annie had her surgery earlier today. I received a call at 1:00 letting me know that all went well. The vet called me again at 4:00 to let me know that she's waking up from the anesthesia, but it would be best if I didn't visit her. She said that a lot of times the animal does worse after the owner leaves. Since she'll only be there tonight and I definitely didn't want to upset her care, I conceded. I received another call at 8:00 letting me know she's still doing well but not eating. I let the vet know she only likes fishy foods (she hasn't eaten since 11:00 p.m. last night). I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon at 5:00 to pick her up and learn about her care.

I wanted to post earlier but work has been beyond crazy today. I'm just now coming up for air. I've received so many messages today letting me know you're thinking of Annie. This means so much. I was really worried about her and it's been so nice getting those encouraging words.

Heartfelt Thanks and Meeting with Annie's Vet

I am hijacking Lucy’s blog once again. I want to say how incredibly moved we, my husband and I, are by the outpouring of donations, well-wishes, purrs and help we’ve received. We just are so thankful to all of you. Your kindness and your support mean so much to us. I want to give a special thanks to Marg for all of her work and time on the fund-raising auction. Also, my friend Dianne did a lovely tribute post to Annie. The love from the blog world has just been amazing!

Thursday, I went to Annie’s doctor to go over the estimate. I still haven’t been able to find a place that will do this for less. This vet is very nice and obviously really cares about Annie. On a side note, Annie’s previous owner called her to confirm everything that I had told her. The vet said, “All I’m going to say is after speaking with her, I’m really glad you now have Annie.” The vet was alarmed that she wants to put her to sleep (yes, she even told the vet that). I had let go of all my pride and requested via e-mail that they consider donating the amount they were willing to pay to put her to sleep toward her surgery.

Anyway, back to the important stuff. The vet explained that the estimate did not include two x-rays, one before the surgery and one after. I understand the one after because they will flush out her bladder and need to make sure there are no stones embedded in there. However, I just paid for one almost two weeks ago. She said we could forgo the one before the surgery but it’s not ideal. Apparently, in just a few weeks new stones can form and also change position. I’m going to give this some thought.

For future care, Annie will need a urinalysis twice a year. She will also need her urine gravity checked regularly but that’s free. She’ll be going on anti-anxiety medication after the surgery and will have to be on a prescription diet for at least a few years.

Annie’s surgery will either be next week or the week after at the latest.

I really enjoyed everyone’s input on how you give time and attention to your kitties. Our kitties all have different personalities. Little Annie still spends a good part of her time under the bed, but she also comes out for some pets and likes to play too. I feel like if I had more time to spend with her, she'd more comfortable here and not so skittish. I also just hate the hissing and growling that goes on between her and Lucy. Annie also hisses at Simba, but Simba, who's just a sweet, old man cat, doesn't do a thing.

Guilty Mama and More News

Hi. I'm reporting in from the blue blanket (and the laundry basket to Mama's shame). Mama's got the guilts. Why? She's been saying that now that she has three kitties, she feels she doesn't give enough time to both me and Annie (Simba is Papa's job). How much time do you kitty parents spend with your kitties? What does that time comprise of? Playing, petting, etc.? Is it daily? We'd love to hear how you spend time with your fur companions, whether you have one or a baker's dozen.

Did you see the ChipIn button on our side-bar? We have some great news on the fund raising for Annie's surgery. A non-profit rescue group, Companion Critters, has offered to help with the fund raising for Annie. This means that any donation made to the ChipIn button on our side-bar will go directly to them for Annie's surgery, and they will give the money to the vet who performs the surgery. Mama feels comfortable raising money in this way. None of it will go to our pockets. This also means that all donations are tax deductible. For those of you that know Shawnee at The Shenanigans of Shawnee the Shepherd, she has been the Director of Foster Activities at Companion Critters. Shawnee is one of the coolest doggies ever. She and her mom go on amazing hikes every week and write about them on her blog.

Mama e-mailed the previous owners to let them know about Annie. They suggested that either we put her to sleep or they take her back (we thought they said they had to find her a home when they moved). Trust me, friends, Mama is keeping Annie here and even I am OK with it in this situation.

Miss Annie's Surgery

If you don't know Annie's story, the last few posts have been about her. In a nutshell, her previous owners were going to take her to a shelter if they couldn't find a home for her before they moved. We took her in hopes of finding her home. Just one day after we brought her home, she started peeing blood. After several trips to the vet, a urinalysis and an x-ray, it was discovered she has stones.

The vet called me last Friday with the estimate. It's going to cost $2,000 for the surgery to remove the stones. In my wildest worries about the price, I never thought it would be this much. I spoke with Trish at Katnip Lounge, who by the way, is wonderful and funny too, just like her blog. Her Grayce had this same procedure in Las Vegas for about $800. Plus, her surgery was laproscopic, which seems to have a considerable less recovery time. I've called three vets in this area. They all charge the same price, if not more, and none of them does the laproscopic surgery.

I've received several ideas and even some vets to call. I'll definitely be calling around starting Tuesday after the holiday weekend to try to find a cheaper vet. I really appreciate all the encouragement and info! I need to also look into somehow making some extra money but I'm not sure where to start.

Although the blood seems to have abated considerably, Annie is still going to the litter box constantly. Other than that, she seems to feel well. She loves to play. She's also spending a little less time under the bed and isn't growling quite as much. Lucy and Simba have been wonderful.

There’s a little strange creature that squeaks and growls and darts around furtively. I don’t know what the big deal is but there seems to be a big fuss in the house over it. I’m in my golden years and expect to retire in peace. Why, oh why, did they bring this funny-looking thing here?

Mama’s going to talk about the creature’s drama now. Warning: When you look up the word succinct in the dictionary, you will not see Mama's picture.

I want to thank everyone for the encouraging comments and good advice about Annie. We brought her home last Thursday. Friday morning there was bloody urine in both bathtubs. The previous owner told me that she did the same thing once last year when they brought home a new dog. I called Annie’s vet. Since she just had a check-up two days before, they asked me to bring her in but they wouldn’t charge me for the exam.

Well $135 later, we found out she has a condition called Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC). Apparently, this is diagnosed once infection, blockage, etc. are ruled out. FIC is brought on by stress by things like moving, new cats, new home or all of the above! This is treated with pain medication, a canned-food-only diet and time. It supposed to clear up in about a week. Since then, she’s been peeing blood multiple times a day, every day. She goes to the litter box more times than I can count and does just little dribbles. It doesn’t help that she’s not drinking much water and only wants to bury the canned food.

It gets worse. When the vet took Annie's urine she also did an ultra-sound on her bladder. There was an unidentified mass on the ultra-sound. Back to the vet she went on Wednesday for an x-ray (and another $100). Annie has two stones. She’s going to need surgery. I’ve been waiting all day today for the vet to call me with an estimate for the surgery cost. I was awake most of the night last night anticipating how much this is going to cost.

Poor Annie has been in the car four times in the last five days and to the vet three times. We’re not supposed to exacerbate her stress, but that’s just we’re doing.

Some good news is she’s been coming out more and receiving pets from us. She still spends long periods of time under the bed, but she has also made some brave forays into the main part of our home. She seems to feel pretty well in spite of the stones and the bloody urine and the too-frequent trips to the litter box. She growls at Simba and Lucy, but they tend to ignore her most of the time. Lucy does hiss at her from time to time, but they’ve been pretty good overall. I bought a Feliway dispenser from the vet at their suggestion (a lot of you suggested it as well).

Thanks so much for listening. Annie is a sweet, sweet girl. She has a waddle more than a walk and a tiny, squeaky meow. I still can't understand why her previous owners didn't want her.

Annie Update

It seems strange to post without pictures, but I just don't have any today. I posted about Annie last Saturday. If you missed it, she's a five-year-old kitty whose owners are moving and saying they can't take her with them.

Well, we decided to take Annie. I couldn't stand the thought of her going to a shelter even though I know there are tons and tons of kitties who are homeless or in shelters. Actually, we knew all along we were going to take her in, but I was hoping to find her a home. Two senior kitties in a small apartment makes it very difficult to bring in another kitty.
Last weekend we met Annie's owners. They are a young married couple and also have a dog. They are actually quite nice, and I didn't press them on why they insist they have to give up Annie. I don't understand that decision. It's just strange because they had all her vet records, took good care of her it seems, gave me all her belongings, took her to the vet earlier this week and bought us food and litter. It just seems like irresponsible people wouldn't do all that.

I picked her up today. She's never lived with other cats but she's very afraid of their dog. Unfortunately, I don't have a room for her to be separated from Lucy and Simba. She's afraid of them and they're afraid of her, so there has been some hissing, growling and swatting. Annie has been under the bed for the last few hours. We've shown her the litter box a few times and I'm just hoping she'll use it when the time comes. It's 9:30 in the evening right now and she hasn't used it since coming here at 2:30.

I hope I'll have better news about all this within the next few days. Right now, we're all stressed and crabby. I feel so sorry for the cats. Annie is so scared and spent the whole afternoon desperately trying to find a hiding place. She hasn't eaten or drank either. Well, at least she has a home. I just hope she'll be happy here. I also hope Lucy and Simba will be happy and content again. I remember when we brought Bucky home that they never felt comfortable with him.

Hello Friends,
This is Annie. Her present owners are moving 9/1 and they can't take her with them. She lives at our apartments and will be relinquished to a shelter if a home can't be found. The owner said that all the no-kill shelters are full and aren't taking any animals.

I have two kitties in a two-bedroom apartment that only allows one kitty. Simba has CRF and Lucy seems to have the beginning of possible thyroid issues (she's going to the vet on Monday). I'm saying this just to mention why we really can't take her.

She's a sweet, five-year-old with declawed front claws and comes with litter, food, flea meds and bowls. Transportaion would be paid for.

Can anyone help or have any ideas?

Hi Kitties, Doggies and Non-Furry Friends,
Today, I'm in the mirror. I love to hang out here. Papa thinks I'm always staring at myself in the closet mirror, but really I just like the spot.

This picture is a reflection of Simba in the window. That chair is outside but Simba is inside.

Simba had a little adventure the other day. Mama opened the door to get the paper around 9:30. They then left the house at 11:00 and who was on the porch but Simba! He was outside for an hour and a half. He's never done that before. He never even tries to go outside. Mama and Papa were upset. They didn't get back until 2:00 and would have had no idea how he got out. The way he hops around on three legs, he's not exactly stealth. Mama doesn't understand how she didn't know that he got by her. Well, fortunately, all was well.

Hi friends. This has been a week of sunshine and fresh breezes. I'm just kickin' it here like I usually do at this time of day.

I've taken up a new habit that Mama isn't thrilled about. I walk around meowing very loudly late at night. I'm usually pretty quiet so Mama doesn't understand what all this meowing means. I'm not giving her any hints so she just needs to figure it out.

I tried a little macaroni and cheese the other day. Where has this stuff been all my life?

I know it's been a very long time, and Mama and I really appreciate some of the notes we've received checking in on us. As maybe you already know, we moved from Pennsylvania back to Southern California, which is our home. I arrived with Mama and Simba on May 19. We stayed at Mama's mama's house (Grammy) for two weeks while we waited for the movers to arrive. Papa drove our car across country during that time.

This is a picture from April. You can see a packing box, but I wanted to show you my pink claw. I think you may need to biggify the picture to see it. Mama bought Soft Paws to put on our claws. She was worried that Simba and I might claw Grammy's furniture. See, Grammy and Pappy have lots of really nice furniture and Mama was so worried that we would outwear our welcome. Grammy and Pappy aren't used to kitties. Pappy bought us a scratchy pad and we only used that. They loved having us there and everything worked out well. Back to the one pink claw: that's the only one that stayed on after the torture session of applying them.

I'm modeling my new collar that Mama bought me for the trip. You can see my pink claw here too.

I picked these funny pictures of Simba because his bottom looks big. He's really quite slim (makes me sick), so I couldn't resist.

We have missed blogging and even more, our blogging friends, terribly. Mama's job is very busy and we probably will only be able to post on the weekends.

I'm just sitting here thinking about stuff. We've been thinking about and praying for the people and animals in Japan. Mama found two very good organizations who are helping the animals--and one who is helping the humans--and has been following them closely on Facebook.

It feels so good to warm my legs and face in the sunshine. I just love sunbeams and we've been getting them every morning for the last few weeks.

Yesterday, we posted about Petfinder's Adopt the Internet Day. Here are two kitties, out of many animals, that need homes.

This is Sweetie.

She looks a little like Simba

Sweetie, a 2-year-old spayed female, is truly a sweet girl that will make a wonderful companion for the right family. She is a special cat with definite likes and dislikes, which limits her options of being adopted easily. The perfect home for her would be a quiet home with no children. In a home setting she will tolerate gentle children, but will run and hide when they become loud or are running about. Caged at the shelter, she feels trapped and has been known to hiss and swat at them. She has not used her claws, even when being poked at by kids, but definitely sends out warnings. She LOVES older people, and in a home will follow you from room to room wanting to be part of everything you do. She will come over and rub against you for attention and especially likes her head messaged and scratched. She also enjoys the nice warm lap of a human to snuggle down on for an afternoon or evening nap. Being a very intelligent kitty, she has also figured out that men seem to usually have larger laps which are her favorite. As much as she adores attention and being brushed, she does not like to have your face right up in hers, so kissing is out of the question. She also does not appreciate being held in your arms for long periods of time. Sweetie wants to be close to you, and loves the touch of a hand that starts out at her head and goes all the way to the end of her shorter than average length tail, which is simply just too cute! This always gets her purr motor going as she starts to circle in contentment. She is very playful and goes crazy chasing a laser light, but her favorite toys that do not involve the help of a human are simple. Her first love is twirling ink pens, second on her favorites list is hiding in or resting on top of paper bags and cardboard boxes especially if they have a small toy in them, and her third preference would be the large plastic circle toys that have a ball in them for cats to bat at. Sweetie enjoys the company of dogs once she has had some time to get to know them, and we have even caught her cleaning them. As far as getting along with other cats, she has lived in harmony with six other cats in a large house, but does insist on being the queen bee. Note: The chaos of shelter life is a bit too much for Sweetie, so she is currently staying in a foster home. If you would like to meet her, a shelter visit can easily be arranged by calling the front desk at (715) 839-4747.

Sunshine and Monday

I'm sorry that I wasn't around much last week. Mama was working a lot so she couldn't help me blog. For most of the week, with the exception of a couple rainy days, Simba and I enjoyed the sunshine.

I am supposed to share seven things about me. Since I’ve been sharing a lot of tidbits about me lately, this will be a little bit about all of us.

Simba is a thrill seeker. Every once in a great while Papa will do the “Ali Baba” with him. It’s like a magic carpet that goes around the house. Simba loves it, but I want no part of it.
Mama is a book worm. Her favorite books are mysteries that have cats in them but dogs will do too.
Simba is a very messy eater.
I love marshmallows. I’ve mentioned this before but it’s worth repeating.
I’m very, very clean. Simba….not so much. He bathes about once a week, whether he needs it or not (and trust me, he needs it).
I love, love, love sunbeams.
Mama loves, loves, loves chocolate.

Yesterday was a beautiful day and the temperature was in the mid 40s. Mama and Papa went on a drive through the countryside and into some small villages in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Then they went on a hike on an island in the middle of the Delaware River, in between Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Simba and His Kidneys

Hi,
I don't get much air time in the Lounge, but since Lucy is taking one of her marathon naps, I thought I would do a post on myself. (You can click here if you want to read how I came to live with Lucy and Mama and Papa.)

Mama posted about my kidneys a few months ago. I have a mild kidney problem, but it seems to be just a bit worse lately. My output is more than my input--if you know what I mean--and so I have to have fluids every day now. See, kidneys need enough water to function properly, not too much water and not too little. Cats with reduced kidney function pee more because their ailing kidneys don't concentrate urine as they did in health. Therefore cats with CRF (chronic renal failure) are at risk of dehydration. They may no longer be able to drink enough to keep themselves hydrated. I fall into this category.

Even though it's obvious that I'm not able to get enough water on my own, I still eat and run around and seem to feel fine. I scream for water from the sink in the middle of the night and in the early morning and that's after drinking copious amounts from my water bowl. For me, drinking water is like a job. That is why I now have to have fluids every day, at least for a while. Unfortunately, they're given via a needle under my skin. I really don't like that part.

I always get treats after and lots of lovin'.

Well, I just wanted to share my story.

Senior Moments

I will turn 15 in a few months, and lately, I've been giving thought to how I've changed since entering my senior years. I know there are some others out there that are seniors: Rosie, Sammy, Andy, Miss Kitty, Lautrec, Tiny, Chica, and forgive me, but I'm sure I'm forgetting some others.

If you're a senior or have a senior pet, have you noticed changes? I used to play with the plastic milk jug ring. I would go to the ends of the earth to chase it, run up and down stairs and sometimes even bring it back. I also used to chase my brothers and just have fun. I now just sit in one place while batting at my dragonfly toy that Mama dangles before me or lick Ratsie.

I'm healthy as a hog, but I've definitely put on some weight over the years. I'm also crabbier at times. All in all, I seem happy and Mama just wants me to stay that way.

One thing that hasn't changed: I hate the camera!

Hey there,

We're pretty sad this week because our friend Annie passed away. We miss her, so we can only imagine how much her mom misses her. We hope it provides her at least a small comfort to know that many of us loved sweet, crabby Annie Bananie.

Yesterday it got up to 66F degrees! Simba and I were outside on our patio soaking up the warm sun several times. Mama forgot what it was like to be our personal door person, getting up and down all morning for us.

While Mama was out of town, I won two awards for my blog!

I received this one from our friends Malyss, Jim and Chestnut from Chronicles from the Shore. They have beautiful pictures of Nice and the surrounding areas. Malyss' posts are so charming.

I received this award from The Chair Speaks. EJ, with whom said chair lives, has adopted many special-needs kitties and they all live in Malaysia.

For this award I need to share seven things about myself that others may not know. This is going to be tough because I've talked a lot about myself here.

I go crazy over the smell of Ben-Gay. It's like catnip to me.
All winter, when I walk, I crackle. Mama calls me Crackle Bum.
My most aggressive fighting move is to bite the air above Simba's ears.
I love watching the cursor on the computer screen move around. It's fascinating!
I like to give head taps when I'm feeling loving.
When Mama plays with me every evening, I always walk out on her.
I miss our fireplace that we had when we lived in California.

Dear Mama,
I'm so happy you're coming home tomorrow night. We haven't had any Fancy Feast or treats. Papa put me in the snow as evidenced in this picture. We've had record-breaking snow storms and cold weather while you're in 77-degree, sunny weather in California. We all sleep in the big bed together at night. Papa snores really loudly. He says that I snore, but I don't believe him.

A Whole Bunch of Stuff

It's been another crazy week at Chez Lucy. One day this week Mama was in her PJs all day (she works from home). She didn't even have time to get dressed! Needless to say I kept my distance. (She tells all kinds of personal information about me, so it's my turn to dish about her. Hee hee.)

Simba has just been hanging out.

He loves to be rocked when he's on the chair. He'll meow very loudly at anyone who goes by to rock him and to not stop. He's our resident fruit loop.

Now, on to the good stuff. I wanted to let you know the winner of the book (see last post) plus a few other goodies we're going to throw in. There were just five people who said they were interested in the book. We used a very scientific process to pick the winner. Mama asked Papa to pick a number between one and five. The winner is Malyss of Chronicles from the Shore! She lives in Nice, France and has two cute cats, Jim and Chestnut. I really wanted everyone to win, but we only have one book, darn-it.

I have even more news. Mama is leaving us--all of us! She's going to visit her Mama and Papa in California for a whole week! She's leaving this Sunday. Papa is staying home to take care of us. I overheard that he won't be giving us Fancy Feast. Sigh. I already miss Mama.

We've been thinking about our dear friend, Annie, a lot. She's at the hospital and her mom is missing her a lot. We really hope that she'll be able to come home very soon and not need surgery. We adore Annie and want her home and healthy! We're praying for you, Annie!

A Good Book

Hello. We hope you all have had a good week. It's been a little crazy here, but I manage. I nap and eat and nap and then play a little in the evening.

Have you heard of this book? It's called "Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World." It's about a kitten who was shoved into the after-hours book-return slot at the public library in Spencer, Iowa on a very cold winter night in 1988. He was found the next morning by Myron, the author and library director. Dewy won her heart and the hearts of the library staff by limping on frostbitten paws to give each of them a gesture of thanks and love. The book tells of the impact the cat had on the library and its patrons, and on Myron herself. It's a heartwarming story, and we would like to send it to someone. This picture is on Tuesday, just one day after our big storm. It's cold, but we have some lovely sunshine, and I'm soaking it up. I even went out on our patio a few times in the snow to get some fresh air.

I'm a bit annoyed at Mama for making my backside look so large in this picture. After all, the camera adds 10 pounds. I'm not that voluptuous. (If you can get past Lucy's bum, you can see that she's giving me a rather dirty look.)

Any plans for New Year's celebrations? I'll be eating Fancy Feast, and Mama made a big pot of chicken tortilla soup. We're going to watch a movie and eat. We'll probably be all tucked away well before midnight.

Warm Christmas Memories

We had a great time on Christmas.

From Mama and Papa, we got two toys from Nip and Bones. Simba was excited over the envelope they came in.

We got a nip nanner and a stinky sardine.

Our Grammy (Mama's mama) in California sent us two different flavors of Temptations and a hedgehog. Even though the hedgehog has no catnip or smell, it was a really big hit with both of us, especially Simba. If you pull his tail, he wiggles, which makes us want to attack him (I can never resist a wiggly tail). Thank you, Grammy!

Snow started last night, and we're having a snow storm and possibly a blizzard today. This is all the more reason to be cozy in my warm home on my warm blanket.

Waiting for Christmas

Mama and Papa are back from their trip to New York. They walked all over and saw lots of the city and all the Christmas decorations. They stayed in New Jersey, just a few minutes away across the Hudson River, because they drove and Papa's goal is to never drive in New York.

I'm glad they're back. Simba and I are getting excited for Christmas. There are always good smells, happiness and catnip at this time of year.

My Hectic Week

Hi Friends. It's been a busy week!
First, as you know, I helped with Christmas cards. (The white mousie was no help.)

Then, I ate one of many (many) meals.

Next, I helped Mama with her work.

Oops. I got distracted by her vanilla yogurt.

Finally, I got to rest.

Friends, if you help around the house, be sure you get some treats out of it. I plan on hitting Mama up tonight for some.

p.s. I'm being left behind while Mama and Papa leave tomorrow for New York for a few days to see all the Christmas decorations. I don't mind since I like the cat sitter now. After all, she scoops my poops and feeds me. What's not to like?

Assistant

Yesterday, I helped Mama get some Christmas cards done. I was willing to get off my blanket just so I could snoopervise and make sure she finished these. I really have no idea what she would do without me.

As they were about to leave to the post office, Papa noticed there was a nail in the tire. They spent the rest of the afternoon getting a new tire. It was expensive and time consuming, but Mama says they're blessed because the mechanic in town was able to fix it and they were able to afford it.

Mama has a cold so I'm going to go sit with her while she watches movies this afternoon. We hope you are all having a nice weekend!

Christmas Card and Stuff

We saw that a lot of you have Christmas cards, so we wanted to make one too. We both wish that Mama was more talented. Everyone's looks so good.

We haven't had snow since Thanksgiving, but it's been pretty cold. The high this week has consistently been about 35F. Mama says I've turned into Velcro. I never leave the electric blanket. It's like I'm stuck on it.

Mama is off work today. She's gonna wrap gifts and send out some Christmas cards and do a little Christmas shopping. Me? I'll be on my blanket if you need me.

Cats on Tuesday: Ratsie Watch

I've been on ratsie patrol lately. I can go weeks with ignoring him and forgetting he exists, and then I hang out with him again. Sometimes, he makes me mad (but not as mad as my nemesis makes me), but usually I just enjoy smelling his wonderful scent and chewing on his tail.

Did any of you or your beans go shopping yesterday for the Black Friday deals? Mine didn't. Mama doesn't really like to shop, but she did go shopping for cat stuff. Our cat sitter is doing a pet drive for a local shelter. Mama bought a bunch of food and treats, etc. for the kitties that have to stay there until they get their forever homes. I was in a shelter before Mama adopted me. I wish there weren't so many homeless animals! I'm so blessed to have my home and wish they all had homes too.

Snow & Turkey Make for a Great Day!

We had our first snow of the season yesterday. It was so beautiful.

I'm Back...Finally!

Dearest Friends,
I am so happy to be back! Mama and papa came back from vacation last weekend. Mama couldn't help me with my blog until today because of her work.

Well, I made friends with the cat sitter in spite of myself. She blabbed to mama how I just sit and purr and don't hide.

Although it's getting colder, we still have quite a bit of sun some days. I missed being able to watch the world from my patio.

There are going to be a lot of preparations for Thanksgiving around here over the next few days. I can't wait! I don't care about the cranberries, potatoes or pie, but I love turkey. It will just be the four of us, and since Simba doesn't like meat--he's a strange one--I hope I'll get a good portion.

I want to thank you for coming to my 14th gotcha party last week. You really made my day special!

I've missed you all. Mama has been busier than usual, and she's getting ready to go on a vacation for a couple of weeks in Europe. Simba and I will stay home. The cat sitter will be coming by daily to feed us. The cat sitter will also be trying to murder me. That’s why I’ll be under the bed. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

I’m sad that I’ll miss Halloween, but at least I’ll miss the humiliation of being squeezed into a costume like last year. I heard Papa say it was like stuffing a sausage into a tutu.

We will still visit until it's time for Mama to leave, but we may not get to post again until her return.

Lucy's 14th Gotcha Day Party!

In the fall of 1996, I decided I wanted a third kitty. We had two male middle-aged cats at the time. I figured I needed a female kitten to ensure the least amount of problems with introducing a new cat. On my lunch hour, I went to the shelter and they only had one kitten if you can believe it. Actually, she was at least a few months old. She was sleeping in her litter box and looked up at me with her green eyes with the same expression she still uses every once in a while today. Also, the rare times she’s boarded, she’ll sleep in the litter box. I think it somehow gives her a feeling of security. I’ll bring her bed to the boarding place but she’ll still choose the litter box. Fortunately, they always keep them clean.

I went back to the shelter the next day, Saturday, to bring her home. As soon as she alit from the carrier, she immediately took over our home and the two resident cats. Strangely, at some point later, she became very fearful of strangers. We can’t pinpoint when that happened, but in her early ears she was gregarious and sociable.

She loved playing with the plastic ring on milk jugs. She’d go to any lengths to chase them and sometimes even brought them back to me. We’d play on the stairs. Up and down she’d go. She was tireless, and she kept a trim figure. Those days have long gone. Some things that haven’t changed are her pretty green eyes and her sweetness with a dash of sass. I love her so much.

In celebration of Lucy’s 14th Gotcha Day, let’s party! I have all of Lucy's favorites: ham and roast beef and vanilla ice cream and marshmallows.

There’s music, catnip, crinkle balls, “pillow garden” stations and two unmade beds with clean sheets.

We also have party favors for when you leave. The bones are for the doggies.

Pillow Garden

Have you heard of a pillow garden? It's a place where you are surrounded by pillows in a gloriously unmade bed.

In between some rainy days, we've been having beautiful, sunny fall days. I'm still able to enjoy my sun puddles most mornings. I like to sit on my patio and see the leaves blowing and all the colors of autumn. Mama says my coat colors remind her of fall.

Hooray for the Weekend

Hi Friends,

Mama wasn't able to help me blog this week. She says she doesn't have time because of work. We may only be able to blog once a week, but we’ll see. We still visit in between from time to time.

It was a rainy week (Mama took this picture of me last week when it was sunny). I’ve been sticking close to my bed and pink blankie and playing with my Morris catnip pillow and crinkle ball from King and the Kool Kittie Krew.

Mama baked twice this week. She made pumpkin bread and sugar cookies. My opinion of the pumpkin bread? Ick. Two paws down. My judgment on the sugar cookies? Scrumptious, but I only got a couple crumbs.

The case of the missing hairball has been solved. I heard Papa ask Mama if she cleaned up a big ole hairball that Simba had yakked up yesterday. She said no, she didn’t know about it. He said when he went to clean it up, it was gone. They couldn’t figure out where it would go to. Apparently, it was huge. The next day, Papa found it. It was stuck on the bottom of his slipper, MOL!

I hope you all enjoy your weekend. Our town is having a Market Day. It’s an annual tradition that’s been taking place for 34 years. They have crafts, music, artists, food and demonstrations of Colonial-era cooking. I’d like to see a demonstration of a Colonial-era mouse roasting on an open fire, but it probably won’t happen.

Each Friday, they feature a different lady cat in a hat that's just right for that particular lady. I just love my hat, and as most of you probably know, pink is my favorite color.

A new hotel will be opening later this month in Ft. Worth, Texas. It will feature custom upholstered beds, chenille and satin blankets and 18-inch flat-screen TVs. If you're a human and you're interested, sorry. This hotel will be exclusively for dogs and cats.

Now, I thought I was knew what luxury was. I get sun puddles all morning, my soft pink blanket in the afternoon, yummy foodies and fur brushings. These pets get facials (I saw a picture of a dog with a blueberry facial and it looked like he was trying to lick it off), turn-down service every night (Mama, you now need to turn down my pink blankie) and suites that overlook an atrium, where robotic squirrels are the floor show (I bet real squirrels taste better). The starting price is $65 a night and goes up to $200. They also have a boutique where they sell Swarovski-crystal collars and $400 pink argyle cashmere dog sweaters. For $20, your dog can have a 30-minute swim in the dog-bone shaped pool.

You know what? When I think of the homeless animals out there and my days in the shelter, I feel pretty fortunate. Being in a loving, forever home is much better than all the luxury in the world.

I Got Mail!!

I'm so excited! I got a package over the weekend! Actually, it was addressed to Simba and me. It's from the Kool Kittie Krew. I knew it was coming, so I've been watching for it. They wanted to send me something because a few weeks ago I said that I never get mail. Isn't that just the sweetest?

There are two different kinds of treats (Party Mix and Indoor Adventures), a package of four crinkle balls, a catnip pillow and a card.

The card is so cute. It has a kitty giving the cold shoulder (something I love to do when I hear the camera turn on).

Inside it says "You're nobody 'til you've been ignored by a cat." MOL! Truer words have never been written. In addition to all these wonderful gifts, Mama won a drawing that they had on their blog a few weeks ago. She got a $25 gift card to a market in our town. Isn't that great?

One of the best things in the package is this picture of King. He is so cute. I love his sleepy face. He's just so handsome and sweet.

I also especially love the catnip pillow. It has Morris' face and his autograph on it. I rubbed on it and rested on it for a long time.

We just want to thank our friends. They are so generous and thoughtful! I'm now off to get some of those yummy treats!

My Ratsie

Last night I was hanging out with Ratsie. Mama got him for me about a year ago when we first moved here to Pennsylvania from Texas. I flew on an airplane and stayed in a hotel. She promised me that once we were settled, she would get me a Plauge Ratise. Now that it's been over year, his wonderful scent* has faded, but he still has a fun tail to chew and his body is perfect for bunny kicking.

*Editor's note: That "wonderful scent" really smelled like old feet.

Hi Friends,
I don't get to enjoy this lovely sunshine today. Although it's going to be about 80 degrees today, it's gloomy and a little rainy. It may be that a little bit of Earl is effecting our weather.

Last night Mama fed me my nighttime crunchies (I just get a little bit of crunchies at night now) in the bedroom so I wouldn't have to go on the Stairmaster or even leave the room. I ate most of them and left the room. A little later she noticed I was gone and found me eating from Simba's bowl. His foodies are special for his kidneys and are fattening. Mama doesn't understand why I did this since I had my own food in the bedroom. That's when she called me shameless. That's right. I'm shameless and proud of it!

I dreamt I went to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air's* mansion to play in the front yard...

*For my friends outside of the US, the Fresh Prince of Bel Air was a popular TV show in the early 1990's that starred Will Smith. It was centered around this mansion in Bel Air, which is right next to Beverly Hills, California. We saw this mansion as well as many others on a tour of Hollywood stars' homes earlier this year.

All About Me

I won an award from my dear friend from France, Malyss. She has two wonderful blogs: Chronicles from the Shore and Benches on My Way. Also, very importantly, she has two wonderful kitties, Jim and Chestnut (Chataigne). They're French too!

I now have to share seven things about me that hopefully I haven't already shared:

There is no greater threat or violent act than having the air above my ears bitten.
I only hang out in ~~the~~ my bedroom. I come out only to use the litterbox, eat and go out on the patio.
I loved to be combed.
My chin is always itchy, and I usually have scabs on it from scratching it too much.
I don't meow much, but I do what Mama calls squawks and tummy meows (do you know what those are?). I also purr a lot.
I LOVE deli meat.
I'm sweet during the day and tart (sometimes) in the evening. Hence, Mama calls me her sweettart.

I know that a lot of you have received this award, and for those who haven't, you certainly deserve it. Mama and I enjoy all of your blogs. Please feel free to pick this up and have fun!

I Love a Good Box

I always hear about the delivery person bringing fun packages to some of my blogging friends. It's pretty rare that I get a package (actually, it's a cold day in July before I get mail). Well, the other day I got one (and it's a hot day in August)! This wonderful box came from Amazon. Strangely, it had some weird-looking things in it, but as soon as Papa removed them, he gave me my very own box.

A box makes a good chin scratcher too.

I highly recommend getting a box. They're very fun to sit in, and the younger kitties like to play in them too. I can personally attest that Amazon is a great place to get a box, but I've heard there are many other places to get boxes too (Mama says she'd like to get me a box from Saks Fifth Avenue but said I best not hold my breath).

Mama has been working some long hours lately. I pretty much sleep all day with a few eating interludes, but I like to play in the evening. The great thing about Mama is that she almost always plays with me in the evening no matter how late it is or how tired she is. I'm playing with Ratsie's tail in the above picture.

Hi there. Friends, it doesn't get much better than this. Papa vacuumed today. Normally, my double-decker bed is on the floor, but he put it up on the bed so he could vacuum. When I was done hiding from the loud, hideous vacuum beast, I hopped up into my triple-decker bed and haven't left since. I highly recommend this.

Hi Friends,
I’ve missed you so much! Mama has been working a lot more than usual and hasn’t had time to help me with my blog. On top of that, she had the nerve to tell me that maybe if I did more than lie in my bed or her bed, I’d have more interesting pictures. Hmph. Maybe if she did something more interesting than work all the time, she could have her own blog.

Well, this weekend Mama and Papa went into Philadelphia to see a Renoir exhibit. Of course, I stayed home and enjoyed some me time. I also enjoyed some clean sheets after laundry time, sunshine on my patio and stealing some of Simba’s food. I’m not boring; I just enjoy the simple pleasures.

I'm so happy that the weekend is just about here! I don't have any plans, but the weekend means Mama has more time for me. Well, I do have plans, but they aren't any different from any other day. It's a cat's life!

Yesterday, I got to skip the stairmaster in the morning. Mama was going downstairs with my food when she saw a huge spider. It was early and Papa, aka spider-catcher, wasn't up yet. Therefore, we stayed upstairs and away from the hideous beast (Mama's words). Well, she wasn't wearing her glasses and she found out later after Papa went to catch it (and then release it outside) that it was a cricket. Knowing her, she still wouldn't have gone downstairs. Worked out great for me.

Hi Friends,

I hope you all had a good weekend. It was hot and humid here, but we got a storm with lots of booms yesterday. Believe it or not, I'm still on my diet but I still sneak some of Simba's fattening kidney food from time to time. I have to be very stealthy about it. Mama makes me go on the stairmaster at least twice a day. Otherwise, I'm very careful to conserve all my calories and lounge around as much as possible. Oh, just one exception is that I need to keep Simba in line and sometimes that requires a good batting.

It's still hot and humid here. Sunday afternoon, Simba and I enjoyed spending time on our patio. There are birds and squirrels to watch, smells to smell and fresh air to feel on the furs. Life is pretty darn good.

Mancat Monday: Simba's Story

We thought that it's finally time to tell you about Simba. Simba came to us in 2000 when he was approximately four-years-old. I belonged to a cat e-mail list. One day there was a post about a cat rescued from the street by a woman who also belonged to this e-mail list. Below is an excerpt from that e-mail:
"Simba is one of the walking wounded. He was rescued from a cat collector, where he was getting enough food to live, but not enough to thrive. Nor did he get any medical care at all when he'd been hit by a car."

We were living in Southern California and Simba was in Reno, Nevada. He ran in front of this woman's car, so she grabbed him and took him home. Since he was limping, she thought that maybe she had hit him. The next day, she and her husband went back to that neighborhood to see if they could find his home. A neighbor saw them and told them that he belonged to a cat collector and that he had been hit bit a car previously. They took Simba to their vet. He got an x-ray. Here's what she wrote:
"Turns out Simba's leg appears to not have been broken. From the x-ray, the vet said the knee cap was terribly displaced (about three inches!). It looks like either the muscle or the cartiledge tore and the kneecap is now scarred in place. He didn't think there was anything we could do."

Well, she put him on plane, we picked him up from the airport and the rest is history. He gets around just fine on three legs, hopping around, not even knowing he's different. He can jump up and even run. He's my husband's side-kick; they're inseparable! Now, 10 years later, he's having some issues with his kidneys, but with a special diet and fluids given subcutaneously, we're hoping he'll be ok for a very long time. He seems to feel great.

We're very glad Simba no longer has to dodge cars. He's very happy, and we can't imagine our lives without him.

I've known Claude for a long time. Mama used to only bring him out on special occasions. He now hangs out all the time.
Yes, even I concede he looks worse for the wear, but I love hangin' with him. He smells really good and makes a good pillow too.
