We are so Thankful...

This is Lucy's mama talking today.
This Thanksgiving we have something to be extra thankful about. We are thankful that Lucy is still with us after her terrible accident last Tuesday. She squeezed though the iron bars on our third-floor balcony and fell onto the concrete below. I looked away for a second and when I looked back, I saw her stepping off. I can't explain the terror, hysteria and deep sadness I felt as I tried to stop her. We rushed her to the vet. I stayed there all day (eight hours) on Tuesday. The vet told us it would be moment by moment, hour by hour. She spent 24 hours on oxygen and was in the hospital for four days, but she's okay now except for some pulmonary bruising, a broken toe and a scratch on her nose.

I cried and prayed on the drive to her vet. I know that a lot of us have different beliefs, but I just want to share how deeply thankful to God I am that he healed her. Even her doctor was amazed that she not only survived but came out of this relatively unscathed.

She came home yesterday. I am so happy to have my girl home. We set her up in the bedroom with her own litter box. Hubby bought her a heating pad (with automatic shut-off) for her bed but last night she jumped up on the big bed several times. She's on pain medicine and has a cast as you can see in her picture. She mainly just lies on her side and purrs constantly and even eats lying down but does get up to use the litter box, bless her heart. I bring her food and water to her. I didn't sleep a wink last night due to worry.

Needless to say, the cats will no longer be permitted to go on the patio as long as we live here. I still have some anxiety at night because my thoughts go back to that horrible day. I am so blessed to be saved from deep sorrow of losing her.

Thanks for listening.

  8. I am so thankful Lucy's home and doing well. It was a blessing that you saw what happened and was able to rush her to the vet immediately. I can imagine how terrifying it must have been for the both of you and I understand completely how the events of that day still causes you much anxiety. I'll be praying for Lucy's full recovery and keeping you in my thoughts and prayers too.

  9. OMC, I can so imagine your terror. I'm so grateful Lucy is okay and is home recovering, will be well.

About the patio--I've seen people put -- not plywood, other types of building material -- along their balcony railings, presumably to keep little dogs (or cats) safe. Not sure you'd want to bother with that, or if the apartment would let you (not all of them here will). Well, you could use inexpensive privacy lattice all around, if it were permissible.

Better indoors and safe, though, but it's just an idea to keep in the back of your mind for the future.

Lots of purrs to Lucy and to you!

  11. Oh my! I so know that feeling of time standing still yet catapulting forward and being unable to stop what is playing out, then not being able to take that moment back. As careful as we try to be, sometimes things just happen. You can do the same thing day after day, year after year and nothing happens but then all of a sudden in the blink of any eye... Don't beat yourself up over it. Sometimes we simply had no control. So glad it is all working out and that Lucy will be OK!

  12. Just read Fuzzy Tales' comment. Our kitties don't show any inclination to go thru the bars of our deck, but to be safe, we have the green plastic mesh along the side of the deck where they might be most tempted to do so. Attached to the uprights with those plastic thingmajigs that tighten up (wish I knew a name for them).

  14. Oh Lucy's Mom, I am so sorry this happened. I have a railing over our stairwell to the basement and this is a huge fear of mine all too often. I keep thinking I should get some plexiglass to keep them from even attempting to walk through the rails, and I think you've just prompted me to actually do it..

    Purrs for Lucy..

  15. Oh, that is awful, but we are so glad Lucy is doing so well! We can just image what a terrible day it was for all of you. We are purring hard for your whole family and Lucy, of course. Is that big cast for her toe? Our klutzy mom has broken all of her toes at least once, and some 3 times. They never set her toes and now she doesn't even bother going to the dr for it because they don't do anything. Take care!

  16. Thank cod you are okay now, Lucy! What a terribly frightening sight for your poor mom to see! We aren't allowed on our balcony even though it's surrounded by brick and concrete. It still has a railing that could be dangerous. Get well soon sweet girl!

  19. Holy carp! We're obviously a bit behind our reading, glad that she is mostly ok! I have experienced this fear once before, i was sure gt went out the bars on the balcony and rushed over but he was not on the ground, turned around to find him inside, from then he could not be out there alone.
